More
than 20,000 penguins were treated with medicines donated by
Bayer following the oil disaster off Cape Town.

A
major oil spill at the beginning of 2001, caused by the sinking
of the freighter "Treasure," threatened to claim the lives
of many thousands of penguins on Dassen and Robben Island off Cape
Town. Residents and tourists in the Cape Province worked to bring
some 45,000 creatures to safety as quickly as possible. Of these,
more than 21,000 needed medical attention to ensure their survival.
Reception stations were set up to clean and feed the penguins and
provide them with medical care. Bayer provided the urgently needed
medication. And after just three weeks the rescued penguins were
able to return to their breeding ground.
