In
environmental protection, process safety and occupational health,
Thailand has persistently tried to follow other countries, which have
a lot of experience in such matters.
In
fact, our laws and ordinances in these areas are, generally speaking,
just as stringent as those of other industrialized nations, particularly
as we have taken on board the very regulations introduced by the
international community and protocols. Ever since Thailand started
focusing on industrialization as part of its national development
plans a few decades ago, we have consistently encouraged and promoted
reputable foreign companies to take part in our economic and social
progress and invest in this country. We have realized the significance
of partnership with global companies, like Bayer, for innovation
and advanced technologies, particularly in the training and development
of the local work force. During industrial development, we have
not forgotten to safeguard the sustainable development of our natural
resources and environment. We therefore also expect the companies
to achieve the same high technical standards at the production bases
in our country as they do in other countries.
Bayer
has been active in Thailand for many decades now and has demonstrated
its confidence in the Thai economy by setting up production sites
in the country. It was one of the first companies to set up industrial
incinerators for waste treatment in Thailand, thus setting an example
for other national and international companies to emulate. Bayer
has also expanded its major plastics production base in Map Ta Phut,
one of our important industrial zones. When difficulties arose in
the industrial estate a few years ago with the neighboring community,
Bayer's and other companies' response was exemplary - all remained
in permanent contact with the site's neighbors and the Industrial
Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) to resolve problems as quickly
as possible. Additionally, Bayer has played a key role since 1996
in our project entitled "Young Environment Envoy," during
the course of which students work to propagate awareness of environmental
principles in our schools.
We
would like Bayer to continue upholding and promoting the principles
of Responsible Care and sustainability in our country as well as
its pioneering commitment to conserving natural resources, operating
its facilities safely and minimizing the environmental impact of
its operations. The implementation of the product stewardship concept,
particularly the safe use and disposal of products, is clear evidence
of its expertise and responsibility.
