Around the world, we are increasingly sharing production sites with other companies - suppliers, customers or service providers. At these Chemical Parks, all partners have committed themselves to maintaining high safety standards and to continously developing a safety culture.

The general public has hardly registered this yet: of our five Bayer sites in Germany, four have been transformed into Chemical Parks to which other companies can relocate. In the same way, we have also opened up many of our sites abroad, so that other companies may locate there, for example at Baytown in the American State of Texas, or at Belford Roxo in Brazil. And it is not only chemical companies that we are keen to have locate to our sites, producing valuable intermediates that then do not need to be transported long distances. Nor are we interested merely in those processing companies that utilize our intermediate products. We also want to attract service companies that provide us with energy for example, or that transport our products safely and in an environmentally friendly manner to their end users.

Our Chemical Park idea was formulated as a response to the changing situation of the global chemicals market. In accordance with our concept of Responsible Care, all businesses moving onto the sites are offered a complete service package. Reliable supplies of energy and basic and auxiliary materials, well-laid roads, rail routes and waterways - all of these are an important part of the offer, as is an efficient disposal plan. Other important services such as fire prevention and site security, process and plant safety and technical inspection are also made available.

At all of Bayer's Chemical Parks, environmental protection and safety are accorded the highest priority. We expect of our new partners that they participate in the Responsible Care initiative.

At the four German sites of Leverkusen, Dormagen, Krefeld-Uerdingen and Brunsbüttel, 25 companies are making use of the attractive facilities on site. As they take advantage of Bayer's own infrastructure, they have been able to reduce their capital expenditures.
