For
Bayer, responsible production does not end at the factory gate. Wherever
possible, the company also supports its customers in the processing
sector as they implement their own environmental protection measures.
One such customer, one of Canada's largest foam producers, was able
to reduce its emissions of methylene chloride by almost 100 percent
after it installed the NovaFlex® system, which was developed by
Bayer. Valle Foam Industries obtains the raw materials for its polyurethane
foam, for the manufacture of furniture, mattresses and carpets, from
Bayer Inc., Canada. Previously, methylene chloride was used as a foaming
agent, but this is now suspected of being carcinogenic. The Canadian
government has therefore called for the use of this substance to be
reduced, before being completely prohibited in 2007.
The
NovaFlex® technique uses liquid carbon dioxide as a foaming
agent, which performs equally well, while having no harmful effects
on the environment. With the assistance of Bayer, Valle Foam will
be able to stop emitting methylene chloride as early as 2002, five
years before it is required to do so.
