| Expansion
in the Asia-Pacific region: We have built a new production plant
for Makrolon® plastic at Map Ta Phut in Thailand. |
 |
Since
2000, we have had a comprehensive product stewardship network in
place in the Asia-Pacific region, where our company is expanding
at a particularly fast rate. The network extends from India to Japan,
Australia and New Zealand. We have appointed product stewards in
all the countries in which we operate. In addition, a regional office
(Quality, Environment and Safety Policy Far East, abbreviated to
QESFE) has been set up with cross-border responsibilities. The functions
of the product stewards and of the regional office are coordinated
from Leverkusen. One of the aims is to nurture contacts with the
local authorities responsible for chemical control regulations and
to endeavor to obtain information on impending changes in legislation
as early as possible in order to establish quickly whether they
affect Bayer. Specific measures are devised in consultation with
the QESFE office and the Quality, Environment and Safety Policy
Corporate Staff in Leverkusen. The duties of the product stewards
range from continuous updating of all the safety data sheets needed
for the Asia-Pacific market to the implementation of a Product Stewardship
Code of Management Practice, in other words an internal guideline
for product stewardship.
The
duties of the QESFE office in Hong Kong are not restricted to topics
affecting product stewardship, however. It lives up to its name
by encouraging cooperation between the Corporate Staff Division
and the national organization in all matters concerning our quality,
environment and safety policy, particularly with regard to the promotion
of Responsible Care.
