The Bayer Buddy Program is a new initiative launched by Bayer in Canada to provide support to children who are newly diagnosed with diabetes. One of the keys to responsibly managing diabetes is learning how to maintain constant bloodsugar levels throughout the day. For children, this can be especially challenging as they need to be aware of what they are eating and when. In addition to having this self-awareness, they must also make it a part of their daily routine to monitor blood sugar levels and deal with the administration of insulin. The Bayer Buddy Program gives kids ongoing support and incentives to successfully manage these new parts of their daily routine and maintain optimum health with diabetes. As participants in the program, the children and their families are shown by Diabetes Nurse Educators how they can adapt to their new situation, how to set goals and how to monitor their achievements in managing their condition. Every time they achieve a goal, the Bayer Buddy participants receive a reward, such as a cuddly toy, a CD, a toy voucher or a cinema ticket.

The program is also supported by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Association of Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Canada.
