The
AgroVida training program, which has already been implemented very
successfully by Bayer's Crop Protection Business Group in Brazil,
Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Chile, has now been extended to
Guatemala, where it has been running since the summer of 2001. It
is intended for farmers in small and medium-sized enterprises and
for students and organizations involved in health care and environmental
protection and is a joint project between Bayer crop protection
experts and the Society for Technical Cooperation (Gesellschaft
für Technische Zusammenarbeit - GTZ), the most important development
aid organization of the German government.
The
program in Guatemala targets around 10,000 farmers in the uplands
of Verapaz. This region is among the poorest in this Latin American
country. According to the principles of integrated crop management,
the farmers learn how to optimize cultivation methods to improve
the quality and yields of their products and, above all, how to
attain a quality that meets the demands of the world market.
