The Bayer Group welcomes the Global Compact initiated by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to combat the problems associated with globalization and accepts the nine principles relating to human rights, working conditions and environmental protection. Bayer was among the founding members of the Global Compact, comprising eight German companies and about 50 companies worldwide. We are confident that this unique project will increase cooperation between the United Nations, national governments and society in order to achieve the social, economic and ecological goals of sustainable development on a global scale.

It is important to ensure that the principles of the Global Compact are recognized throughout the world. While companies cannot replace effective government, we nevertheless intend to promote and implement these principles within our sphere of influence, especially as they are in harmony with the principles of our own corporate policy and the chemical industry's Responsible Care initiative.

In addition to legal compliance in all countries in which we operate, we are committed to observing globally recognized ethical principles. Consequently, we explicitly reject child labor and forced labor. In Brazil we work with the Abrinq Foundation for Children's Rights to combat child labor. In South America, our "Agrovida" project helps improve working conditions by giving instruction to farmers and farm workers. In Africa we provide free medicines to fight sleeping sickness, which threatens almost 60 million people. These are only some examples of our contribution to the Global Compact.

In all our activities, we are aware that our employees worldwide play a key role in implementing and maintaining our high standards. They are responsible for the success of our business operations. Therefore, we also adapt to their needs, which vary from country to country because of differences in local customs and culture.

1. Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
2. make sure they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
3. Business should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
4. the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
5. the effective abolition of child labor; and
6. eliminate discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
7. Business should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
8. undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
9. encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
