Through the LIBRA initiative Bayer aims to stop the development of resistance to antibiotics.
The report on infectious diseases published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2000 shows that many pathogens are quickly becoming resistant to antibiotics that could until recently be used to treat them. Experts fear a return to the "pre-antibiotic era" with millions of people dying from diseases the world believed were under control. The battle against further resistance is thus one of the major medical challenges of the 21st century. As one of the world's leading producers of antibiotics, we have set up the LIBRA Project, a global initiative to fight this problem. LIBRA is Latin for balance and symbolizes the balanced nature of the antibiotic therapy. Together with leading health care organizations and specialists, we aim to check the threat from bacteria which rapidly develop a resistance to the antibiotics currently available. We also want to raise the awareness of doctors, patients and decision-makers to stop unconsidered and inappropriate use of antibiotics. That is essential to ensure that they remain effective.
