Bayer
believes in the power of science to capture the imagination of young
people. And the Bayer agency in Mexico City has found a fun way to
do just that by supporting the Sponsorship Program for State Schools
organized by the Papolote Museo del Niño. This children's museum
is one of the major institutions of its kind in the world and has
already attracted 8.5 million visitors since it opened its doors seven
years ago.
The
sponsorship program gives children and young people from socially
disadvantaged families and orphanages the chance to experience science,
technology and art in a fun way - the focus is very much on encouraging
children to touch the exhibits to help get them involved in the
wonders of science.
Through
play and hands-on experience, the children can learn about the human
body or witness the functioning of a pig's heart, or they can be
transported - with the help of a big screen - to the depths of the
ocean, to learn how sea creatures live. The children also have the
chance to try out games based on science and technology or on communication
and awareness skills. And so that the visitors can try out the Internet,
a computer room is available.
The
sponsorship program has been promoting the intellectual, emotional
and interpersonal development of the children and helping them mature
for the past seven years. During this time, more than 600,000 children
have visited the museum. Bayer Mexico has provided several thousand
children with transport to and from the venue, as well as leading
guided tours and offering films on the big screen. Mail bags bulging
with children's drawings and thank-you letters are evidence of the
program's success.
